Tourism Committed to Climate Neutrality
The tourism we aspire to is competitive and resilient, capable of driving the economy, generating employment and aligning with climate neutrality objectives.
The natural environment and biodiversity of the Canary Islands are key factors in choosing the Canary Islands as a holiday destination. Their preservation and conservation are therefore essential to achieving more responsible tourism.
Our mission is clear: to support and accelerate the journey towards the decarbonisation of the Canary Islands as a tourism destination.
Climate Action Master Plan
Committed to a Better Future
On 22 October 2022, we became signatories as a destination to the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism. On that same date, we presented our Climate Action Master Plan 2022–2030, designed to guide our actions towards a more sustainable future.
Measurement
We have a carbon footprint calculator in place to assess the environmental impact of the Canary Islands tourism sector.
Decarbonisation
We provide guidance and a catalogue of practical measures to reduce emissions.
Regeneration
We establish a framework for ongoing collaboration to regenerate and protect ecosystems.
Collaboration
We foster cooperation among all stakeholders across the tourism sector.
Funding
We publish grant schemes aimed at financing energy efficiency projects and the development of sustainability plans.
Journey to Decarbonisation
Our digital tool, “Journey to Decarbonisation”, has been created to support tourism businesses in the Canary Islands on their path towards a more sustainable future. Free to access, it guides companies through the development of their own Climate Action Plan across four simple stages.
We have also established a Sustainability Office to support businesses throughout this journey. Our technical team is available to answer any questions, either by email or via the webchat integrated into the tool.
Enables businesses to measure their overall carbon footprint as well as the carbon footprint per visitor served.
Helps businesses assess their level of environmental commitment through a self-diagnostic assessment.
The core module provides practical measures to help businesses minimise their carbon emissions.
Offers local initiatives and projects that businesses can join in order to offset their carbon emissions.
Glasgow Declaration
Global commitment to sustainable tourism
The Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism is a global commitment born during COP26 in 2021. Promoted by UN Tourism and the One Planet Sustainable Tourism program, this declaration underlines the urgency of halving emissions by 2030 and reaching net zero before 2050.
Demonstrating our commitment to achieving more sustainable tourism, on October 24, 2022, we joined this declaration as a destination signatory. At that same time, we presented our Climate Action Master Plan, endorsing the objectives set out in the Glasgow Declaration.
Actions within the Framework of the Glasgow Declaration
We strengthen our commitment to sustainable tourism by reporting on the progress achieved in this area. An annual meeting has been established to discuss and share best environmental practices applied within the tourism sector at regional, national and international levels.
This forum facilitates knowledge exchange and helps identify new opportunities to continue advancing towards a more sustainable and environmentally responsible tourism model.
